SPOKANE, Wash. – Dominick Corley had something to prove. Not just to the rest of the country, but to himself.

The senior from Mead High in Washington began the year as the top-ranked prep competitor nationally in the boys 60-meter dash following his 6.74-second performance Dec. 16 at the Spokane Speed Games, but then dropped to No. 3 a month later, as Jaden Wiley and Germain Smith-Mata rose above him.

It took patience for Corley to respond back with a month of build-up before hitting the track again to begin the new year.

The result was worth the wait.

Corley regained his top national ranking Friday at the Spokane High School Invitational at The Podium after clocking a personal-best 6.64 to win the boys 60 final, beating out fellow Washington competitor, Reggie Witherspoon III of GLS Speed.

“I knew I had way more in the tank,” Corley said. “I just needed to execute and be ready to go once the gun goes off.”

Corley advanced out of the preliminaries with the fastest time of 6.70, which helped him regain the top national ranking before competing in the final.

In the final, Corley moved out of the blocks quickly, never trailing for a second, as his acceleration carried him through the finish line, something he said he’s been working on during the past year.

“My body is moving more smoothly,” said Corley, who ran 6.80 to win last year’s invitational race. “I would say that was the most complete race for me.”

Witherspoon III, a Washington 1A state champion in the 100 and 200, trailed Corley in 6.87 for second, with Joseph Ciccio of Steadfast Track Academy placing third in 6.89.

Keelan Wright of Chaparral High in California, who competed with Vista Murrieta High last spring, opened her season with a meet record in the girls 60 final, running 7.31 to take down Mia Brahe-Pedersen’s record time of 7.42 from last year’s meet.

Journey Cole of GLS Speed ran 7.47 for second place, with Marley Scoggins (7.56) and Lahela Ray (7.64) of Code Black Elite finishing third and fourth, respectively.

Annie Packard, Chloe Elbaz, Reese Holley and Georgia Jeanneret of Orange County Heat, all representing JSerra High in California, won the girls 4x800 relay in a U.S. No. 2 time of 9:13.26. Jeanneret also won the girls 800 in a meet-record 2:12.72, beating Mead’s Charlotte Cullen in 2:13.88.

Electric City Track Clubs boys 4x800 team of John Spinti, Conrad Schruth, Ashtyn Rask and Ryan Harrington edged out Spokane Speed Academy by an 8:25.69 to 8:26.67 margin.

Nike Cross Nationals Northwest teammates Logan Hofstee from East Valley in Spokane, Wash., and Chloe Huyler of Lakeridge, Ore., went 1-2 in the girls 3,000, with Hofstee posting a U.S. No. 4 time of 9:38.79 to Huyler clocking 9:42.0 for the sixth-fastest prep mark in the country.

Josie Donelson from Lake Oswego in Oregon ran a meet-record 54.56 to win the girls 400, beating JSerra’s Maya Woolforde (56.61, second), representing Orange County Heat, and Code Black Elite’s Zoe Ray (56.75, third).

YMCA Team Idaho’s Nate Stadtlander, junior at Meridian High, outkicked Jan Beamer to win the boys 800 by a 1:56.58 to 1:57.39 margin.

A week after clearing a personal best 12 feet, 8 inches (3.86m) at the UCS Spirit National Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev., Landry Allen from Hanford High in Washington cleared 12-4.50 (3.77m) for a meet record.

Allen, representing Columbia Vault Academy, took three attempts at 12-10.50 (3.92m) in an effort to surpass her personal-best clearance.

Jordan Lasher from Yelm, Wash., soared over 15-5 (4.70m) for a meet record to win the boys pole vault competition.
